EAT – Dynamo Donuts

Friday, January 7th, 2011

Donuts are back. Long live donuts.

This week, a friend and I finally visited Dynamo Donuts which was opened by Sara Spearin who previously held illustrious pastry posts at Liberty Café, Bi-Rite Creamery and Stars, to name just three spots.

Aside from their exquisite  coffee, we indulged in their apricot cardamom, lemon pistachio, ginger orange, maple glazed bacon apple, vanilla bean and chocolate rose donuts…a delicious and well balanced meal indeed!

*****5 million stars

DYNAMO DONUTS 2760 24th Street in San Francisco’s Mission District. They’re closed Mondays and open from 7am – 5pm, Tuesday-Saturday and from 9am – 4pm Sundays. If you’re hoping to nab the maple glazed bacon apple donut, be in line before noon!

EAT-Four Barrels Coffee and Doughnuts

Earmark your next unemployment check for something REALLY special!!

Just as I became hopelessly spoiled by Blue Bottle Coffee along comes Four Barrels. They bring coffee and doughnuts to a new level. I love them for their NO WIFI – NO CELLPHONE – NO CRAPPY MUSIC policy that provides a grounding social environment.

Exquisitely designed by Boor Bridges Architecture who also designed Flora Grubb, the interior conveys a post consumer chic minimalist modern feel.
Where? 375 Valencia Street
When? Mon – Sat 7-8 Sun 8-6

EAT – John’s Ocean Beach Cafe

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Coffee, Bacon and Eggs please.

Every Sunday morning I meet my friends Charly and Brett for breakfast and we inevitably ponder the same question…where should we eat? Zazie is to crowded, Universal Cafe is too noisy and crowded, Zuni is too expensive. Brett suggested that we try out this super charming, uncrowned restaurant cafe where he often eats after surfing out at Ocean Beach.

Loved it. The food was standard-good. Breakfast and coffee was $10, a bargain by SF standards and the service was friendly and relaxed… yes, relaxed. I found what I’ve been searching for.
